This 4th of July, as on each 4th of July, it's essential to take time and reflect on the sacrifices of our founding fathers and those that gave everything to defend our nation's freedoms from both external and internal threats. Our founding fathers understood that to succeed in our revolution against a repressive regime, we needed to come together to achieve our freedom.
"WE MUST HANG TOGETHER OR SURELY WE SHALL HANG SEPARATELY"
~ Benjamin Franklin
Fundamental differences existed with our founding fathers in terms of how the government should be structured, the relationship between states, and the role of the Federal government. Despite these differences, it was agreed that a new form of government, distinct from the monarchies of Europe, be established with the foremost issue being the protection of individual freedoms and rights.
Internal strife and policy differences are innate within politics. However, as Democrats, we may not agree on what Universal Healthcare means or whether the Green New Deal is an overreach. But what we can agree upon is that we need to reform our healthcare system and to provide health insurance to over 87 million Americans that are either uninsured or underinsured. We can also agree that climate change is real and that we need to be moving toward a more sustainable economy that takes into account the full cost of production.
Recently, COVID-19 has shown the cracks in our healthcare, economic, and political system and highlighted the absurd wealth inequality and prejudice in America. These are issues that we can't ignore and that we have to come together as one, unified political party to face. We can't let this opportunity pass quietly like a ship in the night and fall prey to our political party divisiveness. This crisis should be a sign that change must happen for our Capitalist system to continue to thrive and for ALL Americans to prosper. If we continue to ignore these growing cracks... millions without healthcare, a lack of affordable housing, and the mass incarceration of millions of black men and women, we will certainly fail as a nation. This experiment in Democracy will be a failed one.
On this July 4th, 2020 weekend ... let's come together as one Democratic party and rededicate ourselves to the fundamental principle that ALL men (and women) are created EQUAL with inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We have a lot of work to do between now and November 2020, but the hard work will pay off when we flip the Texas House, win back the US Senate, expand our majority in the US House, and win back the White House.
