The past few weeks have been a challenging time for all Americans. We are facing a worldwide pandemic of catastrophic portions, and our local, state, and Federal government leaders are scrambling to put together public healthcare plans to protect us from the effects of COVID-19. In addition, our legislators are writing important legislation to pave the way for economic recovery and future growth. Several themes interwoven into these massive pieces of legislation have been front and center over the past few weeks. It's not a coincidence that the bill is called the "Families First Coronavirus Response Act" and mirrors many of the policies Democrats have been advocating for years.
Increasing Public Healthcare options
Passing Federal Paid sick leave
Implementing Student loan deferrals or cancellation programs
Tackling the Digital divide between economic classes
Eliminating Corporate Welfare and subsidies
It's being made more apparent than ever during this recent crisis that the Democratic Party is the party the supports families, looks out for workers, wants to strengthen and protect small businesses, and believes healthcare is a right.
The Democratic Party understands that it's essential to fight for the weakest member of society and not to allow the gross inequality that exists in America to continue.
Each of these issues is foundational for the Democratic Party and is strengthening the position of Democratic candidates across the United States. The theories of trickle-down economics, deregulation and eroding environmental protections, and the crony Capitalist nature of the Republican Party are causing it to crumble at the feet of the absolute worst President ever to be elected. Donald J. Trump. The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help. ~ Ronald Reagan No, the government isn't the panacea for everything, and we do need to make sure tax dollars are being spent wisely. However, with millions of Americans about to lose their jobs and thousands of businesses about to shut their doors, the stimulus checks, consumer protections, and small business loans are things that ONLY the Federal government can handle and without intervention, the economy would collapse and our American way of life would never be the same. Come November 2020, Democratic candidates running for office on a local, state, and national level needs to remind independents and moderate Republicans that the principles that ultimately saved millions of American families and the entire economy from destruction at the hands of COVID-19 are the principles and beliefs of the Democratic Party. And it's these beliefs that will ensure America will remain the last best hope of earth.
